What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last set of permanent teeth to emerge. They typically appear in the late teens or early twenties. While some people never develop them, most adults have four - one in each corner of the mouth.

In many cases, our modern jaws are too small to accommodate these extra teeth. This leads them to become impacted (stuck under the gum) or grow at awkward angles, causing pain, infection, or damage to neighboring teeth.

Symptoms & Impaction Types

Not all wisdom teeth grow the same way. Understanding how yours are positioned helps us determine the best surgical approach.

When Should You Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Not everyone needs an extraction. However, waiting too long can turn a simple procedure into a complex one. We typically recommend removal if we detect any signs of pathology or interference with your bite.

The following symptoms may be indicate your wisdom teeth require attention:

  • Persistent throbbing pain at the back of the jaw
  • Swollen, red, or bleeding gums behind your molars
  • Difficulty opening your mouth or unpleasant breath/taste
  • Crowding where front teeth are starting to shift

What to Expect During the Procedure

Knowledge is the best cure for anxiety. Here is a step-by-step look at how we handle your surgery at Clayton South Dental.

STEP 1

Anaesthesia Administration

First, we administer local anaesthetic to completely numb the area. If you’ve opted for sedation, this will be administered now to ensure you are in a state of deep relaxation.

STEP 2

Accessing the Tooth

If the tooth is beneath the gum, a small incision is made. In cases of bony impaction, we gently remove a small portion of bone to gain access to the tooth structure.

STEP 3

Sectioning & Removal

To make removal as gentle as possible, we often divide the tooth into smaller sections. This minimises the pressure applied to your jaw and preserves the surrounding bone.

The Recovery Timeline

Recovery varies from person to person, but most patients follow this general trajectory. Following these steps closely minimises the risk of complications like dry socket.

First 24 Hours

Focus on clot formation. Bite firmly on gauze for 30-45 minutes post-op. Avoid spitting, rinsing, or exercise. Stick to cold liquids and room-temperature soft foods.

Day 2 - 3

Swelling and bruising may peak. Use warm compresses on the cheeks. Gently begin salt-water rinses after meals to flush out debris without using suction.

Day 4 - 7

The "ache" phase. You can usually return to light activity and work. You can begin eating slightly firmer foods like pasta or soft-boiled eggs.

Weeks 2+

The gum tissue will have closed over the site. Deep socket healing continues for several months. Resume normal brushing but be mindful of the healing area.
